Metamorphosis

For the set build project the year was split into two groups and then each group was given a text, they were asked to create two rooms set in the stories, that create the psychological thriller feel in them that you get from the stories, the sets will be a film set and the end product will be the sets and photographs that create this feeling within them. The first thing we all needed to do was to read the story and pick out what is important within it, what rooms will be needed? what furnishings could you use? how should it look?
The Story my group was given was 'Metamorphosis' which was written by Franz Kafka, the story follows a man called Gregor, his family has relied on him for years to clear debts created by his father and to provide for them, the heavy work load and his family take there tole and right at the beginning of the story Gregor wakes up to find that he has turned in to a bug. His family finds it very hard to deal with and his Parents are unwilling to go near Gregor, so after loosing his job he finds that he is shut in his room with only the occasional visits from his Sister Gretta. But soon the family runs out of his money and they have to sell some of their things and go out to get jobs, putting even more strain on the family. Gregor becomes completely shut off from his family even to the point that his sister no longer goes into his room to clean or move his stuff around to make him feel more comfortable but just slides his food in. The family takes in lodgers to make a bit of extra money and one night while Gretta is playing her violin Gregor leaves his room to listen to the music, the sight of him causes the lodgers to hand in their notice and refuse to pay and the family have a small fight with Gregor to get him back in his room. The next day Gregor is found by the cleaner dead in his room, the family force the lodgers to leave, finally take a day off work and go to plan the rest of their lives.
Once I had finished reading the text I then thought about what were the important things that needed to be considered for the rooms. I knew that the most important rooms in the text were the living room and Gregor's bed room, but how would they fit together so we only had two rooms, in the text Kafka makes it sound as if there was a door from the living room to the bedroom so the best thing for the build would be to just build these two rooms and have them connecting. I also thought that is was important to keep in mind things like where the other corridor is and how it connects to the two rooms because in the text Gretta talks to Gregor through the door from the hall way while his parents are in the living room talking to him at the same time. when I read the book I imagined that it would be set in somewhere like New York or some European city. It sounds as if it is set at the turn of the century but it isn't written down so it could be an idea to look at other periods of time for the setting. The most important thing to look at though is what the most important furniture is and how it will all fit into the space we are given for each room.
